Our investment philosophy is that “one size fits all” does not fit clients at all.

Leathe & Associates unique mission since its founding in 2004 has been to provide a trusted wealth advisor option for a select group of discerning clients. By design, this is a low volume, high value-added business model allowing us to develop and maintain broader and deeper relationships with our clients.

WE ARE BOUND BY FIDICIARY RESPONSIBILITY.

There are two types of investment firms, Registered Investment Advisers and Broker/Dealers. At our founding in 2004, Leathe & Associates chose to be organized as a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA), believing that the Fiduciary Standard offers clients the best regulatory environment.

Registered Investment Adviser

  • Governed by the Fiduciary Standard which states “that an adviser place their clients’ interests above their own. It consists of a duty of loyalty and care”.
  • Firms and Advisors place clients’ interests first at all times.
  • Cannot make trades that result in higher commissions for themselves or their firms.
  • Will disclose any potential conflict of interests.

Brokers and Broker/Dealers

  • Brokers work for Broker/Dealers whose interest they serve. They follow a different regulatory standard called the Suitability Standard which means that transactions must be “suitable” for clients’ needs.
  • Broker/Dealers can sometimes find themselves in conflict with their clients by selling one of their own “proprietary” investment products resulting in transaction charges in client accounts. They fit you into one of their strategies.
  • The primary income for a Broker/Dealer comes from commissions earned from making transactions for the underlying customer.

Demystifying the process.

  • Private, initial one-one meeting which typically establishes whether the prospect and the firm are a good fit. Historically, the majority of prospects have been in contact with existing L+A client(s) and referred prior to making the appointment to meet.
  • Follow-up sent from L+A to prospect with documents for the prospect to review. These include:
    • ADV Part 2A Brochure: Explaining the firm in detail and how it does business
    • Privacy Policy
    • Code of Ethics
    • Draft Investment Advisory Agreement
    • Information on how to move to the next step in the process
  • Prospect contacts L&A to ask questions and get clarifications on the document package.
  • Prospect and L&A agree that the firm is a good fit.
  • Prospect signs the fee-based Advisory Agreement.
  • New client begins to gather financial information: which may include brokerage/bank/other investment statements, tax returns, Trust documents, legacy documents, decrees, and other pertinent documents.
  • New client and L&A coordinate opening and/or transferring accounts.
  • New client and L&A develop the proprietary client investment approach called the Portfolio Objectives and Guidelines Statement.
  • Wealth management strategy implemented.
  • We will hold regular check-ins to implement any changes or updates to your finaincial objectives.

Wealth Management does not have to be

Overwhelming, complicated or expensive.

Jeffrey C. Leathe, MBA, CPA, Advisor

The focus of Leathe & Associates is to develop, execute, and monitor wealth management strategies mainly for individuals and their families. Jeff founded Leathe & Associates in Portsmouth, NH in 2004 after serving as the Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer of a New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) listed company known as a leader in the global life sciences marketplace.

Jeff is unique as he has had direct responsibility for the issuance of several billions of dollars in stock and fixed income securities over a number of large public offerings across the globe. He managed the company’s relationships with the global money center commercial bank syndicates, the rating agencies such as Moody’s and Standard and Poors, the New York Stock Exchange, and the sell side analysts covering the company.

Jeff was also a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the audit committee at a NASDAQ listed software company for 17 years. In addition to founding Leathe & Associates, Jeff has worked in private equity, venture capital, commercial banking, and investment banking companies.

He has also been an Adjunct Professor of Corporate Finance at the University of New Hampshire’s Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics and was honored to be the commencement speaker for the graduate degree program.

Jeff has served as a Member and Vice-Chair of the Town of Eliot Land Use Planning Board, and as a Member and Chairperson of the Town of Eliot Budget Committee.

Jeff was an Incorporator, Director, Grants Committee Member, and the first President of the Marshwood Educational Foundation, a 501c3 charitable organization providing academic grants to students, faculty, and administrators of Maine School Administrative District 35 (MSAD 35). These grants fund innovative and creative educational opportunities that fall outside of the District's operating budget. He remains a member of the Grants Committee.

Jeff was the Chairman of the Endowment Committee, member of the Executive Committee, and Board of Directors of the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute whose mission is to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and achieve a college education. This organization holds a special place in his heart as he himself is a first generation college graduate, and he joined the Mitchell Institute Board to further the opportunities for other Maine first generation students to also attend college.

This array of academic achievement, teaching, civic involvement, and senior leadership experiences in industry and global capital markets allow him to provide clients with a high level, personal form of traditional private banking. Jeff received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire. He is also a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
